With nearly 60,000 local people in the workforce, plus the ability to draw labor from Detroit, Toledo and Ann Arbor, Monroe County is well positioned to meet the labor needs of manufacturers. Additionally, many local employers have been able to recruit from the 50% of the area's workforce that commutes outside of the County each day. These "work closer to home" campaigns have been highly successful.

Monroe County has a long history of manufacturing success. This success is due in large part to the exceptional skill level of the area's workforce. The importance of manufacturing to the Monroe County economy is highlighted by the fact that a full 23% of private sector workers are employed in manufacturing. Further, in a time when manufacturing jobs are declining nationally, Monroe County's manufacturing employment has grown an astounding 10% in only three years.
